Depending on the season this spillway releases water 3 or 4 times a day. The water level in the narrow Aratiatia rapids would rise up maybe 15 feet, with up to 90,000 litres per second going by and inundate the plants growing up the sides. There is a slight sulpherous smell but overridden by the glorious aqua colour of aerated clear water.
