For the first time ever I arrived here when things were about to happen. Visiting Aratiatia Rapids at the right time is important because water is released from this dam several times a day, the rather spectacular rock fall downstream makes for awesome viewing. I had enough time to walk to the viewing platforms below the dam, I am really slow. In the background are some of the thermal vents on the edge of the Wairaki field.
